I am a graduate of Middle Tennessee State University with a major in New Media Communication and a minor in Communication Studies, so I guess a blog is something I have to do, right?
Blogging was something I gradually fell into. I’ve always loved words and the joy of writing, but becoming an author was never my plan. Pursuing a writing career seemed taboo, but life forced me to.
Growing up in Columbus, Ohio, my favorite author by far was R.L. Stine. I dreamed of writing stories and TV series just like him. In a way, I owe it all to him. When I was eight years old, I wrote my first story about a little girl named Penelope. At the time, I didn’t know I was writing about myself, which is why I could never conclude Penelope’s identity. As a young Black female, I struggled between Penelope being a Black girl or a redheaded white girl.
Between us, Penelope was an angry, redheaded, freckle-faced white girl who tried her best to fit into society. Penelope always found herself on the wrong path even though she so desperately wanted to do right. The thing about Penelope, and me, was she could identify her problems and issues; she just didn’t know how to overcome them. Sadly, this resulted in recycled trauma and outlandish acts. Just like Penelope, we all need healing. We all deserve an outlet for our feelings. Solely for Your Soul’s mission is to inspire and activate one’s own healing process. Essentially, “Here is mine, now find yours.”
In essence, my confessional stories and poetry seek to stir the soul by unveiling raw and often unsettling truths of the human experience. Whether drawn from my own life or crafted through fictional characters, my work dances on the delicate line between reality and imagination.
